Frequently asked questions
What is Dear Stranger?
Dear Stranger is a quiet project that sends anonymous letters through the mail — written by real people, never mass-produced. A stranger writes the letter. A stranger receives a letter. You can do both. You don’t know who sent it, and they’ll never know who received it. There are no replies. Just something real, from someone real.
How does your service work?
Anyone can write a letter. It's free and 100% anonymous. Your letter will then be sent to a stranger. You will never know who it's going to and they will never know who it came from.
To receive a letter, just select the amount of letters you'd like to receive and choose one or multiple categories. Place your order and your mystery mail will be on it's way.
How much does it cost?
It depends on how many letters you want to receive.
One letter: $9
Four letters (sent every two weeks): $32
Twelve letters (spread over six months): $99
Shipping is included. There are no hidden fees.
Writing a letter is FREE and 100% anonymous.
Can I choose when the letter arrives?
No. That’s part of the magic. Letters arrive on their own schedule — usually every two weeks for bundles — and always by mail. You won’t get a notification. They’ll just… show up.
How are the letters delivered?
By regular mail. Each envelope arrives sealed, addressed to you, and contains just one letter. No branding. No promo material. Just the message inside, waiting to be opened.
Are letters being send world wide?
Yes! We send letters to kind strangers all around the globe. Whether you're in the U.S. or on the other side of the world, your letter will find its way to someone who needs to hear it. Shipping within the U.S. is free, but we charge a flat $3 shipping fee for international letters to cover postage and handling. Letters are carefully prepared and mailed once a week to ensure thoughtful delivery.
